My 1 yr old BO hen hurt her leg a week ago. She had a scrape on the leg (treated with neosporin) that is healing nicely. The leg swelled up and she had heat in the elbow/hock (not sure on chicken anatomy) and it was actually green with bruising up her leg under the feathers. The heat lasted about 36 hours. The bruising cleared up through the week and is gone. The swelling throughout the leg/foot as pretty much cleared up. Squirt acts like she wants to put her foot down, and actually has hobbled on it a bit. She spends her nights in the house in the dog kennel, and I have put putting her out in the chicken tractor (by herself) during the nice hours of the day. Her food and water are nearby and she hops around a little bit and pecks at the grass.
I'm just wondering how much longer I should expect the poor girl to be in the invalid ward? I'm sure she's lonely, I don't think she likes our company as much as the company of her flock!

Sprains can take a few days to heal or a very long time to heal. I had a Black Star that never healed. I had to seperate her because the others would want to fight with her. I put her in a seperate pen with her own house and she was as happy as could be. She hobbled around on one foot, pretty much acting like a normal hen. She laid eggs normally as well. You can buy some vitamin B complex tablets at a pharmacy and crush a couple into powder and sprinkle the powder into her feed. It might help speed up the healing process. Alot of rest and relaxation helps the sprain to heal.

Thanks for your help. You answered me last week when I was panicked about her. I did just see her in the kennel resting weight on the entire leg! Just like when my horse hurts himself.....patience!!
