. My question is how long from pip to zip ? The little guy is a day early its day 20 today will he/she be ok ? The humidity was raised to 65% to help the little fellow hatch.

I agree with Katy

I have hatched many chicks and they can Zip right after piping or I have even had them take up to two days before, but usually they will zip within 24 hours of piping.

Yeah! I cant wait for my two little guys do something. I'm waiting and waiting and WAITING! My hen is sitting on them. I need to know is when i do get a pip or zip can I take it away from the mom and put it in the brooder with the heat lamp? I dont want to do anything stupid!

Thanks, I didnt think I should but wishful thinking. They are in the coop with 40 chickens and if they kill these babies I will be so upset. I dont know when she started sitting on the two. We were on vacation from June 29 to July 5th. So somewhere in between those dates. It should be any day now. I candled them again just a few mins ago when I caught the mom off them and they are moving. The one I could hear and feel moving and it tapped back when I tapped on it. The other one is just moving and not as big in the egg as the first. So I'm constantly checking. I know it's on lock down so I dont disturb unless mommy gets off.

One of mine pipped and it took twelve hours to start to zip on the big end. It was zooming along got half way though and stopped. I saw it moving and straining but it didn't get any further. I waited 24 and then decided to intervene. I slowly started peeling the eggshell back and found it's rear and then it's feet. The little stinkbug had managed to turn itself upside down and it's head was in the small end. I didn't even know that was possible but she (we hope) is so small I guess she had the wiggle room.

amynbrent;

Would it be possible for you to lock the other chickens out of the coop (at least until night time) when you find out the eggs are pipping? Chicks under hens can hatch really fast sometimes. Or perhaps you can put a wire rack, fencing, or something else over the front of the nest box so no one can disturb the hen and the babies can't fall out? Just some ideas.

As for the time of pip-to-zip..Yep, those guys basically covered it. Though sometimes the chick will pip awhile before it's ready to hatch. These guys normally pip, rest a long time (half a day at least, if not 1-2 days), then start zipping and are out within 10 minutes after they start zipping. Goodluck and I hope he/she comes out healthy and happy

. By the way, I have some eggs that are supposed to be hatching in 2 days and I already have 7 pips, so I think your little guy will be fine. That's a first for me though. I had to replenish the water and a couple of them started cheeping when I took the lid off. So cute
