In light of the wonderful segment on the Today show today, I got to wondering about raising chickens like we do as being a NEW trend.

How long have you been raising YOUR pet flock?

I've had mine for 20+ years... started with 2 chicks and 2 ducklings from a flea market in Wentzville, Mo. Ducklings, Isis & Jasper (hens), for my kids (in their 30s now) and chicks, S'Ugly (a turken chick) & Dulcie (both roos, of course), for me! I never looked back and have never been without chickens since.

SO... what is YOUR story?

Ive only had chickens for about 3 1/2 years but we went from 10 to now a little over 70 (most are chicks) we have 12 layers, 2 silkie hens and 2 roos. the rest are still young and not laying yet. We have a couple groups of straight runs from hatcheries and feed stores that we will have to get rid of extra roos though so the number will go down..... Chicken Math it always gets ya.

I think we're just at our 2 year anniversary of being proud chicken owners. It's been a great experience, despite the sadness of the losses. I adore my chickens.

All my life :)
Growing up you could always find me in the chicken house or the barn. One
of my favorite pets was a red hen named Henrietta. I carried her around in a small bucket, swang
with her..lol, never played dress up like I did with the dogs and cats but yep, I've been a chicken
lover all my life!

started with 8 chicks-5 were roos-got rid of 4. I had all BO's. Bought a bator the rest is history:) 75 chickens now with 90+ in bators!

I've had birds continuously for the last twelve or thirteen years or so. Then off and on for the tens years or so before that. And my family had poultry when I was a boy. Not sure how many actual years that would total up to, but it would be well over twenty.

And every week I still learn something I did not know before. Especially this last weekend!

About 3 weeks for me but we had chickens for several years when I was a kid. I'm not sure if that technically counts as I was only responsible for the egg collection.

We have two Buff Orpingtons and an Australorp now.
