I want to go to tsc(family farm and home) on my way to mother in laws today...will be there for 6 to 8 hrs. Would the chicks be ok without a lamp? Maybe a heat pad or warm towels? I have a pad made out of clay that I used when pregnant..covered with cloth of course...would that work? Any suggestions?

assuming the clay heat pack is similiar to a micro-wave rice bag? If you want something that you can just use and pitch when you are done, go to the dollar store and get a bag of rice and some tube socks and make a cheap heat pack... heat in micro-wave and cover with towel... nice moist heat... just like mom would be.

I would be nervous doing that. That is a long time and these are day olds you are getting? I would be afraid the clay or rice sock would lose its heat too quickly. Could you bring a heat lamp and plug it in at your inlaws?

Then again Im the one who picked up day olds from a friends incubator and drove home with the heat so high i thought i was in a sauna (for 30 minutes) .....

I was thinking id reheat ever cpl hours or whenever necessary....I will be there with the microwave readily available...and the clay heat source is supposed to prevent hot spots and such...

With tube socks do u literally put white uncooked rice into a sock and heat in the microwave? At least that's what I'm picturing..lol

yep... dry rice in white tube sock (just tie the end shut), cover with hand towel... I actually sell a fancier version (have a lady who buys a new one every year for her cat

)... but the tube sock thing is quick, easy & cheap.

heat about 2-3 minutes... check it before you put it with the chicks!

I agree, any of these heat sources will be fine. They don't need 95 degrees for 8 hours but they will be better off a little warmer than room temp. I'd also figure out a way for them to drink. Actually, I'd probably put them in a fairly small box and throw some feed in as both food and litter.
