How long should i keep broken wing wrapped?? UPDATE!!

My duck apparently broke her wing last month, it was hanging down and she could not pull it back up. I was able to wrap it with vetrap pretty nicely, and the bandage has stayed in place since January 25th.

How much longer should I leave it on??

If you are looking for data on how long it takes a bird bone to heal if it is broken- there are many variables- 2 weeks or longer (to eternity) . It depends on which bone is broken, how many pieces, whether the pieces are anywhere near each other, whether there is infection present, whether there is an adequate blood supply, whether your wrap actually stabilized the break, age of bird, health of bird ect.


Options:
1) have it x-rayed, then you will know whether it is healed or not- and if it healed well or badly
2) take of the wrap and see if it hangs down anymore. If it doesn't, it is healed. If it does- it is not healed. If it not healed- then your options change to

1) get professional help and get it x-rayed and do what is recommended- rewrap vs surgery vs amputate ect
2) do it yourself again, and leave it again for a few more weeks.

Thanks. I don't think it was too bad because she could move it when she tried, she just couldn't hold it up. I really have no idea exactly where it was broken. She's a healthy duck, only about 10 months old and I don't think there was any sort of infection in the wing....I really hope there wasn't. The wing has been wrapped close to 2 weeks now, I think I will just have to take the bandage off in a couple of days and hope for the best! If it were up to me I would take her to the vet, but my hubby would never in a million years go for that. He'd rather have duck soup, lol. And there's NO way I will let that happen.......

Bring it to a good doc, my dog broke his leg a few years ago and he is as good as new. Probably runs faster then he did before.

UPDATE: I left the wing wrapped for just over 2 weeks, it had been wrapped nicely to where it was stable but not too tight. When I took the wrap off the wing was obviously stiff, and I did notice what looked like exposed bone in one spot (ew!) but there was no infection present. So far so good, the first couple of days she was adjusting to having mobility of the wing again. A few times I saw it hanging down, she'd pull it up and it would fall again. But I left it alone and kept an eye on her and it seems to be fine now. She holds it up just like she always used to and it looks normal. I don't know that it's strong enough to flap it like ducks do on occasion (she's a fat pekin so at least she doesn't fly!) but I think it's safe to say now that she will be just fine.

Thank you for posting this! Someone opened the duck pen and let the ducks out. My Labradors found them first and Olive, the Mandarin hen, got "retrieved". I didn't realize what was going on at first but I got Olive back a little worse for wear. her left wing appears broken so I wrapped it up and I will keep her in the house for a couple weeks. I knew how to stabilize the wing but couldn't remember how long to keep her immobile. Two weeks plus it is. Off to get more vet wrap (great stuff! many uses...kinda like medical duck tape - no pun intended - use it on goats, horses, human children, and now the duck!) Olive is not impressed to be in a dog kennel in the bathroom but with luck she will be back out with her buddies shortly after Thanksgiving!
