I'm thinking of buying chicken feed in bulk. But my question is how long till the feed will go bad, when stored in a dry, cool place??? Because I don't want to go out spend a couple hundred dollars in feed and find out its going to be a waste. Please experienced chicken owners answer me, thanks.

Commercial bags of feed usually have an expiration date on them. You might be able to get a good idea by checking that out.

We have 8 hens and buy 50 lb. bags, one at a time. We've found that they smell musty and start clumping if we buy two.

I store feed in metal garbage cans, but won't buy more than 30 day's worth in summer, and maybe 45 day's worth in winter. The vitamin content deteriorates over time, even if stored correctly. Time from the processing plant to your door varies also. It's not cheaper if it spoils or looses too much quality. You might be able to combine an order with other local chicken owners, and save some$ that way. Mary
