How long to separate hormonal rooster?

I have an almost 5 and 1/2 month old huge speckled sussex cockerel named Versace who until yesterday acted almost like a hen. Yesterday he mounted the top hen (my favorite) who was not receptive and fought back. I foolishly hoped he’d know better when the time came since he’s usually scared of all the older hens but suddenly he seems to have his eye on her My plan has been to separate him if he mates unwilling hens due to raging hormones since I’ve been told that’s the protocol to avoid injuries and over mating. How long should I separate him? Sorry if this has been addressed but I can’t seem to find the answer for this. Thanks in advance!

Maybe 6 months or a year. It won't be an overnight thing.
Overmating is what they do.

Same thing with my roos. It's ok that the hens fight back they just have to learn. It's part of life. My favorite hen is the trickiest and every time Octavious (my roo) does his dance for her, she tries to kill him unless theres blood or loss of feathers from the hens due to mating, I would not separate them.

I am curious as to what you decided to do. I have two roosters - a Hamburg and a Cochin - and the Cochin is so sweet and laid back, but the Hamburg has started attacking him and going after the hens, even though they have no interest in him and fight back. I'm thinking of buying or making him his own coop this week because he's just making everyone stressed out...including me!

Sorry, I haven’t responded to the thread bc I’ve still been figuring it out! I let Versace do his thing a little longer and just kept the two older girls who I know couldn’t tolerate him away from him. I thought he might just need practice but then he focused on one hen, Nicki, and chased, pulled her feathers and just made a mess on her back every time. He doesn’t seem to know how to do it so I put him and his younger companion Vera back in the enclosure where they grew up before they integrated. It’s next to the coop but fenced off with enough room for them to forage and play and they sleep in one of those little hen houses you can buy at a farm store which they slept in as babies. Since I don’t want them to get bored, most days I let Versace and Vera into the front yard area which they seem to love. Since he has a little friend he seems content and still gets to practice protecting her. My hope is that when she matures (maybe a few weeks) they’ll be attracted to each other and she’ll squat for him because none of the other girls show any interest. This might not help you but maybe if you could find a hen who likes your Hamburg or is not mature yet she won’t know the difference and will be more receptive? Hope you can find a solution!
