How long to wait to eat eggs after antibiotics were given?

Hi,

My girls (3) all had to go through an antibiotic treatment for respitory infection. The antibiotic treatment was over on Sunday, it is now Tuesday. How many days do I need to wait before their eggs are safe to eat?

It depends on what type of antibiotic but I believe the rule is 2 weeks after the last dose was given. I have in the past gotten kind of scared of antibiotics so we didn't eat the eggs for 4 weeks and that was from 14 hens, so alot of eggs went to waste. We ended up scrambling them and gave it back to the chickens...they of course loved it.

They were on Terramycin. Yes, I hate to have to give antibiotics, but the apple cider vinegar in their water didn't help stop their sniffles and soon it got worse. I had my 3 big ladies in my office for 3 days so I could hand feed them this medicine. Within 3 days they were back on their feet in the coop again, I kept them on it for 10 days total.

I noticed you were from NW Houston. I just moved from there! I actually lived near downtown but kept my horses and chickens at a stable on Kempwood and Hollister. Hurricane Ike almost tore my home down so I felt it was time to relocate far, far away from hurricanes!!

I wish I would have been able to see Lopez Farm, sounds like fun!

Two to four weeks? Wow, that is a long time.

Once again the time limit on terramycin is 19 days
also how did you hand feed terrmycin to chickens?

and then how did you give it to them when back in the chicken house?

It is NOT good to remove chickens to the house
surely you could have put them in seperate pen

by taking them to the house you exposed them to heated building
and when going back to pen it is cooler

Why did your other hens not get the snuffles?

the hens that have itare carriers
terrmycin is not a very good medication as it has had the good part taken out when physer took it off the market because DEHEC made them in 1990
when it came back a few yrs later they did not have much power to it

the government had it taken off as the people were feding it to chickens and bef and the people got allergic to terrmycin

also terrmycin MUST be kept in cool place like frig in dark container with tight lid on it
as air and heat and light takes the strength out of it
also YOU MUST mix it new every 8 hrs as the strength is gone in it in water by then

PS BY FEEDING EGGS BACK TO CHICKEN you multiply the time the eggs can't be eaten by you

you should feed the eggs to the dogs and cats

Thanks for the information.

I "hand-fed" them the rx with a short straw. I just used my thumb at the end to hold the mixture (in water, I followed the directions to the T) and gently let it drip in a bit at a time. I had to do it this way because none of them wanted to drink or eat anything for the first 2-3 days.

I only have three chickens. They came from a different farm as adults and shortly after I got them they got sick. I asked the "breeder" what to do because the apple cider trick didn't work for them. I HATE antibiotics for all of those reasons that you stated but they weren't getting better.

I feel bad giving them those antibiotics but I have never had to give antibiotics to my chickens before. I just moved up here from TX. My chickens back home never needed antibiotics and stayed very healthy with natural remedies...my preference.

I never heard about NOT bringing them into your house and I've had chickens all of my life. I suppose that is why we need this forum! (I better tell my mother because her chicken comes to the back door each evening and sleeps in her laundry room!)

I think people tend to let their chickens become pets and as I never did I alway tried to keep them as chickens
if your mothers come to the house they feel that is their sleeping place not the chicken house
they probably don't know any thing else
I doubt she can retrain them or want to

As a matter of thinking the people who try and make pets out of their chickens truly love them just not aware of the fact that a chicken is a bird that has bird habits if left to live like a bird

You could have used a eye dropper and put it to the back of the throat and they would then drank it
but your idea was a good one

when I was on the farm we hatched 3500 chicks a ur for decades so there was no bringing the sick ones in
I did have large wodden with wire bottoms rabbit hutches to keep the sick ones in if in singular numbers
but usually the whole group needed coccidiosis medication as they never got sick with any thing else

Idid not keep any that got colds, they would infect too many others, so I was not a believer in keeping that kind of sickness around

Not sure where you heard it's okay to give medicated treated eggs to your dog or cat. Sorry, but that's a no-no! Just like us it's bad to eat chicken eggs durning antibotics. Anytime I prescribe meds to my clients I alway advise them to throw the eggs away- that is if you love your pets.
