I have a broody hen sitting on 3 eggs that are due on April 1st. How long until they start to smell if they're not any good? I candled last week and there was movement but now I see no movement. They are really dark and going by the pictures on the sticky, they look promising (there is the empty space on the one end and I see veining and darkness in the middle) . I smelled them and they don't smell bad at all. They smell like mama hen.

If they are due on April 1st, then are they on like day 15-16 now??? Don't worry about looking for bad eggs yet. If after the hatch date they don't hatch, I would wait a few days before finally considering them bad. I usually wait until day 25-27 before throwing them out. Better safe than sorry!

Good luck with your eggs!!! I hope they are all OK.

Also, after a few days after the hatch date, if any don't hatch, look for leaking/oozing of smelly liquid coming from them. This is a good way to indicate a rotten egg that is about to explode. BEWARE!!!! Highly-rotten eggs could explode and it's never happened to me yet but I hear it's a really unpleasant experience to have a rotten, stinky egg explode all over you.

But again, I wouldn't worry about it all just yet.
