How long untill the coons stop coming

I won't let my DH kill them. Instead we catch them in a live trap and he takes them to the next town over. (about 5 miles). Funny thing though, when I see one hit by a car in the road, I laugh Dr. Evil style.
How is it that I can't allow my husband to kill them, but I delight in their demise on the road? Probably because it's not me running them down...

Yes, I've lost several chickens to coons and the loss of one was too many. Just keep trapping them. Set two traps if you have to and eventually you'll be down to hopefully none.

They are like prematex. They are everywhere .

We had a couple in the yard the other night....they like the bird feeder. It's almost time to take it down. The bear will come around now that it is warming up.

Hopefully you'll get them under control soon. Keep the feed and any food sources tight so they have nothing to eat, and keep trapping and disposing of them until they dont' come around anymore. Be careful tho---- we got our duck-eating racoon this week, and put the traps back out and got a skunk.... Tricky situation with a skunk in a trap and not knowing exactly how to get it out without getting sprayed!

I was wondering if they would keep showing up BECAUSE I`m setting the trap , but the chickens themselves seem to be the real reason they`re coming around more and more

They tear up the bird feeders , and my wifes garden boxes as well as killing the chickens , if they get a chance

The wife didn`t want me to kill them either ,the first time they got to 3 of our orig. 6 NH reds... untill they tore apart the 4 Bantams we replaced them with in what I THOUGHT was a more secure cage ...through the 1in. welded wire , the ONE night I left the cage out right next to the porch. It had wire on 2 sides , and one of those were against the knee wall. 2 of them worked together to rile them up , and flying around enough to get there grubby little paws on them.

It`s now on wheels (with the White Silkies relacements) , so it can be moved in the porch every night untill I make them a more secure home outside with the other 3 New Hapmshire Reds.

All other food sources are in the potting shed.

How many are typically in a "group , or family"?

Me: A lot of people on here have problems with coons. (Here as in BYC.) Thankfully I have not seen any around here (as in our coop.)

DH: They can't get through our fence!

Me: Are you smokin' crack?? Coons can get through any kind of fence and we have a gaping hole in the door!!

DH: No, they can't!

I can't get rid of them br SSS they just come back x 2's . I put up a electric fence & put in 4 strands 1 really low, as low as I could . then one strand at at 10" then at 2' then 3' that stopped them cold. also keeps out dogs, coyoteys, weasels, possums, ect. & people out --so far

Old time cockers will tell you that coons will find their way back if you don`t take them at least 80 miles away. I don`t know how they came up with that distance, but the point is they will return unless you take them a fer piece. Now, with fuel prices, time constraints, and traffic to deal with, the best remedy is still a .22 in the head. As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, I have a remedy, if your coons become overwhelming or trap smart. Just PM me, I`m willing to share.......Pop

And the corollary is: they will NEVER be all gone. No matter how many you trap and kill, there will always be more wandering into the area. The best you can hope for is to 'fish out' the local population enough that you just have to deal with a smaller number of newcomers... but there will ALWAYS be more raccoons coming.

Thus, you pretty much need to raccoon-proof your coop and shut your birds in at night, or expect to lose some sometimes.

Good luck,

Pat
