Here's my Ollie and a pullet, I think it was Gracie at about 6 months:

Sadly, Ollie died at 7 months of a heart attack. He weighed 18 lbs. when he passed.

This is Mercy, the CX that decided to go broody. She couldn't quite pull it off, but by goodness she tried!:

The last of my CX rescues passed around 9 months old. No, they didn't live long but I have no regrets and if you could ask them, I don't think they did either.

She is beautiful! She looks exactly like my CX hen looked! We have two of my since passed hen's eggs under a broody, so I can't wait to have her children running around in the yard! She was bred with an RIR so I'm interested to see the result.

I have a cross I aquired last year that is over a year old now. She is doing fine and pushes my welsummers around. She lays eggs bigger than my duck eggs (kahki and muscovey) and gets around fine for such a big bird.

I have one over a year old now, she does seem to be slowing down, but still going, she hangs out with the one footed bird. Both can navigate the handicap ramp, but mostly stay in the barn, or lays under a small pine tree. Sounds like her days are numbered, based on most of the experiences here. I hope she defys the odds (more than she already has) of course her name is "fat amy" if you don't get the reference look up the movie Pitch Perfect. Large and proud!

Just curious as to what you feed her. Does she eat layer feed like the others or does she have a special feed?
Six weeks ago DD and I picked up a few chicks at our local feed store (1 RIR, 1 Barred Rock, 1 White Plymouth Rock) and it turns out the white one is a Cornish X. This bird has stolen my heart and I have no intention of eating it so any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

BTW, Love your birds name! :D

Today I encountered a young yuppie/military couple who looked like they just walked out of a gym. They had "rescued" a 3 or 4 week old Cornish cross and were buying a runty picked on barred rock orsheln farm to be its friends. This pullet had missing feathers and a scabby vent.

I told them how to treat this pullet but that "rescuing" a Cornish cross was nothing like keeping a natural breed like barred rock.

I explained that it will eat itself to death and love it. I Said not to give it the feed advised them at purchase because that is the feed that will be their fattening demise. I said that like an obese person you would need to limit it's food like adding free range bugs, give it something else to enjoy like free ranging and chasing bugs and butterflies and that it is maybe good he will have a female around to care about.

I said I raise them for meat but I'm not like Tysons or purdue. I give them lots of space and real animal time before they die

They were mortified that these were the factory, 1sqft DEbeaked king of chicken.

I told them it would be an uphill battle to get him to adulthood since they are designer dead birds, with sparse feathers for plucking.

I hope I told them right. That they succeeded if it lives 1.5 years with its new black barred girlfriend.

Help! I am in love with a cornish x we accidentally acquired at a feed store. Since all of our girls are my daughters pets, we would never make them into dinner. She is 7 weeks old now. I understand they grow large and heavy fast. How long will she survive? I can't bare to butcher her.
limt the feed take her on walks

This thread is a million years old.

It would be very painful for your chicken to live too much longer, its legs would have alot of weight on them. I suggest you find a procceser near you and get them to take care of it. you can always get another chick right? I know it won't replace that one but still, you don't really want it to live in misery do you? Your daughter needs to understand if she loves it she will let it go.
Uh no my broiler lived 4 years she can run but yiu just don’t have to feed I don’t even feed her she eats what she fines in the gras and she can run as normal chicken you just have to starve them to death if you don’t want leg issues
