I have a broody hen that has been sitting on unfertilized eggs for probably about a month now. I have been planning to put some chicks under her but all my attempts at getting chicks have failed. Our local feed store will be receiving chicks on the 18th (approx 7 weeks after she became broody)... is that too long to keep her sitting? Will she keep on sitting until something hatches out? How long until she gives up?

I would try to break her broodiness. Setting takes a lot out of a hen, and especially in this hot weather I would be cconcerned that she might die.

If it was my call, I would discard all the egs that are a month old, and candle the rest, a well brood hen will sit as long as there are eggs to sit on.(you are a lucky lady to have such a broody hen)

after candling the eggs, I would keep her on the ones that are fertile, then you would'nt have to buy more chicks!!!

She'll probably take chicks if you put them under at night. As far as the eggs I'd be worried about them being rotten and exploding under her! That's a smelly mess. Maybe replace them ( again at night) and see if she says broody until you get your chicks.
