How long will the Hen stay Sitting??

I would use a pencil, also you dont want to put to many eggs under her too many days apart. if you keep adding eggs they will hatch later, and she will leave the nest to raise her babies and leave the other eggs (they will die) !!!

OK , I have 4 eggs under her NOW . 1st. 2 eggs were 2 days ago , 1 yesterday and 1 today . THINK I will stop adding ...

UPDATE:

Had another of the abandoned eggs hatch out this morning. About 11:30 last night, when I turned the OTHER eggs, i checked for pipping, and had none. When I checked on them about 9:00 this morning, there she was, still damp and resting, but very much alive.

Have two more that should be hatching in the next two days, then the rest at least a week out.

cajunlizz- I used a pencil to mark the eggs when we counted the nest when this adventure began, and within a week the pencil had rubbed off and we ended up removing viable eggs into the house. Next time i'm gonna try something like a water marker. Non-toxic to kids and pets, but more durable than a #2 pencil.

hmmm, ive never had pencil rub off any of my eggs, weird... did you ever get the other chicks under her ??

No, I didn't. Mama started attacking the littlest of the four, so they have been moved to my friend's house (the one who gave us the chickens to begin with). She's gonna brood them for now, until I can get a brooder working properly.

I've got the one that hatched this morning, and I'm trying to get a small dog cage up to comfortable conditions for it, and then I'll go get the clutchmate that is in exile at the moment.
