How Long

I have 3 hens that continuously are in the nest boxes. They growl and fluff and all that good stuff. The question I have is how long will they sit? I have one that has sit 5-6 weeks. I'm not sure what is going on. I need some wisdom please.

They're broody and if not given fertile eggs to hatch or have their broodiness broken, sometimes they'll sit till they die.

Sometimes they'll give up but that's not a good avenue of approach because going 5 weeks or more only eating, drinking and stretching once a day is very detrimental to their health.
