Hello,I am new at BYC raising.I live in the city limits and have kept and shown rabbits for years.I got the chicken bug and I have a nice coop and my neighbors on both sides and in back of me are fine with it.Everyone says to get Hens and not roosters which I understand. How loud are the hens?We live in a area with houses close to each other. Also which hen breeds are quieter? How many should I get?I have a family of four and would like some eggs and be able to give some away. Thanks dblwing PS I must confess,I picked up about a dozen pullets RIR,Aricana, and black and white checkerboard kind, type slips my mind right now. They are suppose to be all hens.

from NY! Congrats on your new chicks! Well, in my short experience, the hens are pretty quiet. You'll hear them trilling, warbling or clucking, but they're not loud-not like a bunch of dogs barking loud. Good luck!!

I think it depends on the hen. I have one barred rock who is constantly yelling, and an Amercauna who yells before and after laying. The others are quiet.
