How maintenance free is sand in the run?

Building a 15x15' run. Wondering if sand is the way to go since unfortunately the run is located at the bottom of a little hill and thus will get some rain water in there. How high do you build up the sand and how maintenance free is it really? Am I going to have to sift through it daily, weekly to get the poop out? Thanks! I'd love to do deep litter since it seems so EASY but I'm worried about the smell with the rain drainage.

Unless you want to spend your whole life cleaning up poop, eventually the sand will harden as the poop and other debris mixes in. There is no "perfect" material for a run.
