I know that I updated the pics in my other thread, but know I know to make my subject more specific- so forgive my "over posting".
Here are the pictures I took today at 7 weeks. It's amazing how fast they change!

I'm afraid that I (at the most) have only 1 girl form the dark brahmas- very disappointing if true... I know the pics aren't the greatest- can you help me guess?

Dk 1 (Pullet?)

Now for my buff Brahmas- I suspect that I have three roos and one poor little hen. The hen (I think) is the one with the down-turndish tail and the less red face. She (?) also has black and buff feathers on her back spreading toward her tail. The "boys" tails have started to turn up. They are more aggressive- peck at me when I try to pick them up.

So what do you think?
I can't keep more than 1 (maybe 2) roos and want more brahma babies, so I don't know which brahma roo I will be keeping, but I guess for straight run if I get a couple of hens- that's not too bad right?

Kinda hard to see #2 but it definitely looks like all 3 of your darks are roos. Dont forget that unlike light and buff ; dark(silver penciled) males and females have totally different feathers. The hens are multiple laced(penciled) and look silvery grey over the entire body, they also can look kind of like barred(kind of) at juvenile stage, but those three little guys have black bodies with the white in the wing area.

As to the buffs, I agree with you.

Something you can look up is sexing brahmas as day old chicks, with most brahmas(i dont know about lights) you can tell males from females by the color of chick down on their shoulders and bellies.

Yep, all three of the darks are cockerels and one lone buff pullet.
Do you always have such bad luck?

As far as luck goes- they were straight run and I didn't expect to get that many hens because of that...I ordered two cochin pullets that I would be sure to have at least 2!
The one that I wanted to be a roo was my Gld Sebright- and it looks like he might be a she... so there goes that!
Since they were bantams- I had to take a chance with the sex... It gives me an excuse to now try and hatch some eggs if I can find them right?

My son wants to keep a drk roo and a buff roo.... I don't know if we can handle two bantam roos with (possibly) 5 hennys.

Anyone want some adorable bantam brahma roos?

********NEW OUTDOOR PICS*******

Silly me- read the suggested pic posting stickey after I posted my pics and while I didn't follow all of the suggestions, these are a bit better.

I know, I know, I probably have 3 drk roos, but I'm holding out for a miracle...
I'm still unconvinced that # 3 is a roo. He/she has an awful lot of white, especially compared to the other two. When they were babies, this one was the one without pronounced chipmunk stripes on it's back- just different.
The first pic is the he/she. The second pic is for comparison (of one of the other two drks.)

Can anyone tell me the trick to telling the difference between roo/pull as chicks with the drk Brahmas?
I really want two more each of drk & buff Brahma hens, but can only order straight runs because they're bantams!

it's clear that your birds still unknown sex, you have to wait until they grow
, but i noticed from my experience that the sex of a chick, whatever breed is he , can be determined after 14 weeks

While that's true with alot of breeds, in the dark brahmas the cockerels feather out completely different than the pullets.
Froggie, your first outdoor pic (the he/she) has me confused because the coloring is not what you'd expect from either sex.

The second pic is a cockerel.

That's why I'm confused too. I know what the hens & roos look like as adults with this breed. I've looked all over the net for pics..... I guess we'll be doing a waiting game with a few of my chicks.......

Does anyone know what the trick is with the chick sexing with this breed?
