Right now...I have a European Starling that i rescued and hand raised.... yes they are a Wild Bird, but they are not illegal to keep as pets in Texas or most states. Under federal law it is also fine to have them as pets since they are not a native USA Bird, but were introduced back over 100 years ago...
yep those pest birds as most people call them...ones that gather together on telephones by the thousands...
We had over 300 pairs of finches and 20 pairs of parrots at one time...but due marriage and a stepson with asthma, birds had to go...but he is grownup now
i believe i would take a european starling over any normal bird that people keep as pets LOL....
Yes they can talk...just like a parrot....and can live over 20 years
...
and they get very attached....demand attention.............and are quite the characters...
just be sure to keep any silver colored change hidden!! ROFL and jewelry...
they have their little stashes!!! they hide...
i finally found a silver earring that i lost 1 years ago....on top of a shelf and about $8 in change....
I had an African Grey that passed away five years ago. I also had a Vosmari Eclectus Male. He was too loud and had to live elsewhere. I still have a Hahn's Macaw. He is annoying but cute.
We have cockatiels (Lutino, standard gray, and pied), a peachfront conure, a cherry head conure, a blackmask lovebird, an African Gray (Congo), society finches, and diamond doves.
I just posted a list of birds I have in another thread...but if you're thinking of getting some inside birds that need the least attention for the most entertainment, I'd say finches. I started with an older pair of Zebra finches, Peter and Lois. Lois passed away and we tried introducing a new female to Peter but she also died. Since he lives right next to our canary, he seems quite content to be alone, but I recommend getting a pair of them. As long as you don't give them a breeding nest (the kind that are enclosed except for the hole in the front) they shouldn't produce any eggs. If they do, buy some plastic ones at the pet store and replace the real ones with them.
Finches do need a pretty big cage as they do not have their wings clipped and need to be able to fly. You can find them cheap or free through Craigslist and Freecycle or build one yourself. We built our sugar gliders' cage out of vinyl coated rabbit wire and pvc pipe and it's huge and they can glide in it. Peter has a large cage to himself. Another draw to finches is their song--they aren't super-loud and I find their noises soothing. Peter gets going when he hears the phone ringing or good music from the TV.
This past winter we added a congo african grey to our family, Kiki. i joke and say she is evil but she absolutly adores my husband and she like to make fun and taunt people. She is pretty funny and musical. Her favorite thing to do is to sound like a cell phone and confuse people. She gets me all the time and i will think its my phone...than she laughs at me. My husband would like to get a male eventually. The indoor birds are his thing. I prefer my farm animals
But we got her (she is 8 i think...my husband knows better than i do), her cage and tree stand all for $650 but that was back in Michigan.
I am new to chickens but have had tiels for about 4 years. I think tiels are awesome. I'm realy getting to enjoy chickens as well. Friends say they dont like birds to to be in cages. They dont get it. Birds love their cages. It's home. The local pet store "Our Feathered Friends" has some beautiful looking finches. Good luck with your choise. I too have dogs, a cat. 4 red ear slider turtles, fish and chickens. I'm thinking of getting a Leopard tourtoise.
