Thanks for all your advice. The farmer who built the coop for me said 6 hens. I think he must be a bit more industrial about it all. I do hope to free-range some in the backyard, but I'm not sure if it will work out with neighbors and predators. I can move the tractor every day if I need to in order to give the hens good ground to scratch up.
Anyway, now I need to do some "chicken math".
How many chicks should I buy from the pullet bin at the feed store in order to end up with four? I suppose if I buy 6 and actually end up with 6, I could sell or give away a couple, but we are likely to get attached.
