I have 9 chickens at this time. Would like to add a few more later on. I have not made the new coop yet so would like to know if I need bigger for the birds that I have and the 2-3 more that I want?
Thanks

They will have a run and also free range. I was thinking about 8 by 15 for the run? What do you think for the run? At this time I let them free range from about noon till they put themselves to bed.

So by that I could have 20 chickens? That seems like alot for that space? Dont get me wrong I would love to have that many but it just seems like it would not be enough room for my chickens.

It is just a guideline that someone set, we only have 30 chickens in a 20x16 coop, so we try to give LOTS of space

And for a run they are supposed to have 10 sq ft per bird as a recommendation.

Question----This is what I have-------I have a barn building that's 8 x 10 but I have it divided so I can walk in it and its caged all around the walls about two feet wide except the front entrance-this way I have a work counter and feed storage and storage on top for wood chips etc. the lot on the left is 23 x 12 and 6 feet tall and these chickens (20) can go in the left side of the building- they also have a small coop that I bought on ebay inside run and on the other side of the barn I have a 12 x 12 run with a toilet type coop 4 x 4 attached to the run- these can come in the right side of the barn building (20) on that side----is this to many chickens for this? What type of heat should I use this winter? Teresa in WV

At 8 x 15 for the run, that would be 120 square feet in total. If you have 10 square feet per bird, 12 chickens should be your max, I figure. More than adequate for the 9 birds that you have and also adding a few more. However, adding a few more square feet to the run would also allow you more "additions" to your "addiction" in the future! (Especially if your coop size allows for more birds than your run size does.) Have fun!
