How many chickens for my coop and run,

Hi I've build a choop and I'm starting to put together a run. I'm wondering how many chicken people think would be comfortable in the sizes that I've given, the coop is 7x11 feet and the run is 25x40 feet,


I know by reading thus forum a lot of people work out how many chickens they want and plan accordingly but I have gone a bit backward, I've build and laid out the coop area and would like as many chickens as I can get but don't want to overcrowd them,


So any advice is much appreciated.....

Your limiting factor is the coop. They need about 4 sq foot per bird to roost to prevent squabbling. That would be 19 birds. For your yard, to have a yard with grass for them to free range on you could easily have 40.

Also you might want to think about "chicken math" you get some and a year or so later you will want more

and more. So you might not want to get too many at first, they grow on you and before you know it "chicken math" hits.

I think 12 or 15 birds max. More space is better than crowded; start with fewer and work up to more. Bantams take slightly less space, but breed type matters too. Mary
