How Many Chickens Should I Have?

In southwest Virginia, your hens should be able to get outside in the run practically all the time. I think you will be OK in that aspect. My chickens don't like wind and snow. They are fine in the cold or rain, but if the wind is blowing or if there is snow on the ground, they find shelter.

With 10 hens, two of your roosts are enough. You also only need 3 nest boxes. More won't hurt unless one of the roosts is in your way when cleaning or working in there or the extra nest boxes are taking up coop floor space. If the nest boxes are raised enough that the chickens can get under them (don't forget how high the litter will be) then they do not take away from coop space. Since chickens are basically ground dwelling birds, floor space is all that really matters. Extra space up high usually does not help that much.
