Hubby is building a new coop...it's 4x4x3.5
how many chickens could I keep in there...the chickens would be free ranging during the day. We are new at this and all help is much appreciated

Thanks
Courtney

Four standard sized birds, as long as the 4x4 is empty floor space. If you have a feeder and nest box taking up space, less.

I don't know how many bantam.

I asked this question last week and they told me I should have 4 square feet per chicken inside the coop and I was told that I could have a maximum of 10 chickens in a 6' deep x 8' wide x 6' tall Coop. They told me about having more if they were Free Range but I can't recall what the standard amount was when that was taken into account.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for your replies...I have four standard size chicks right now but I wanted more. So...i guess i'll have to wait or have hubby build me a bigger coop...which is definately not happening

Thanks again
Courtney

Hello neighbor, as a general rule of thumb, 4 square feet inside and 10 square feet in the run. My coop is 4 x 8 x 5 and my run is 16 x 8 and I have 8 chickens, 4 RIR's and 4 Buff Orps. Hope that helps.

More great info from another MA chicken owner! My wife and I hope to build our coop this year and get the chicks in the spring.....just need to clear that section of the yard first.....

Keep in mind that the 4 sq ft and 10 sq ft are the minimum. More is always better. You don't want the little dinosaurs to let their cannibalistic tendencies come out!

I agree with everyone - the free ranging doesn't really matter much since you are in a cold winter area, like I am. They'll be in that coop a good bit in the winter
