Hi,
I returned from a two week holiday to find a broody sat on 12 eggs. The family's excuse was 'she pecked!'
Chicks again for me to deal with & find space for!
When candling I found three to be undeveloping & sure enough when I opened them they were fertile but nothing was happening. They may have been newly laid. She's now sat on 9, all of which seem to be coming along fine.
We have 6 hybrid layers, and she's sat on a mixture of their eggs, inlcuding hers, so I'm hoping the eggs are going to hatch around the same time.
I am wondering how many chicks is a good amount as I would have liked to put a couple of slightly different strains of hybrid day old chicks under her when they begin hatching. I will leave it this time though if say 13 chicks is far too many as I haven't got time or space to hand rear yet.
Any answers to my babbling will be great. The maximum we've ever hatched with a broody is just two.
