how many chicks to get?

im getting 5 chicks soon from natures hatchery were the minimum order is 2. do you think i should get just 5 chicks or should i get 10 incase some of them dies in the mail or as i raise them. I would be able 5 back up chicks to a farm down the street so that i wouldn't be keeping 10 chicks.

Well, if placing the extra chicks isn't a problem, then I would get more. You can order a greater variety and then choose which ones you want to keep And in general, it's usually safer for them to travel having more companions to keep each other warm.

I think 10 total is a nice number to raise. It would be the max for me (to brood), but I don't know your circumstances.
