Hello! I'm new to the chicken world and have been nonstop researching the last few weeks. One thing I can't seem to figure is how many chickens can my 4'x8' coop hold? I will be building my run when the ground thaws, I'm in MI. I am converting an ice shanny my husband built last winter into a coop. He's so generous ;)

In an 8 x 4 foot coop, you can probably keep at least 8 chickens, possibly more if you have a run. This gives each chicken about 4 square feet of inside space.

Oh wow :) that's great news! Thank you so much! I cannot wait to get my chicks.

Thank you. Unfortunately the ground is frozen solid. :( wish I would have did it in the fall. Thats what i get for procratinating. Chicks can be out of the brooder around 4-5 weeks right? I plan on getting silver laced wynodettes, Rhode island reds, and maybe a couple Sussex. They seem to be good dual purpose birds from what I read.

Me too! I'm over winter. Ready for spring already.

Yeah, I think even the chickens are ready for spring.

Depends on size but standard chicken 8, bantam maybe 10. This would be on the high end. Have fun!

Standard - 4 sq ft

bantam - 2-3 sq ft

Edited for typo
