i recently picked up some eggs from a fellow, he was more of a duck guy but had accumulated a wide range of turkeys all penned up separately as to breed. when i asked what kinds they were he said there were all kinds, red ones, black ones...but none of the production white ones out there. I didnt have long to look but i could see burbon reds and bronzes. how many kinds of bronzes are there?! there was one pen that had decidedly tall birds in it, some of the tallest i had seen. another had more delicate looking ones perhaps a bit smaller then burbons, then a 3rd had another pen somewhere in the middle... I'm not a big turkey buff yet, working on it though. how many kinds of bronze style turkeys are there? I don't think any were broad breasted style. and how can you tell the difference between them all? i have 3 dozen eggs approximately to hatch together. the burbons should be some rusty yellow i think i saw on the net, and if there are black spanish i'd assume they'd be all black like the black phase of slates are, so that would leave the mess of bronzes. I hope differently but i expect they will all look alike as poults, will i have to wait till fully mature to tell them apart?
Thanks

thanks. I dont know much about bronze like turkeys, theres a possibility the could have kept 1 form or another of the wild turkeys, are those distinguishable from each other and bronzes? I will pop over to feather site. thanks

You will be able to tell the difference in those 3 breeds. The blacks will be black with yellow on their face. I'm sure they are standard bronze unless he is versed in turkey AI.

lol, sorry i phrased that wrong. to me wild turkeys look bronze too. Is there a way to tell the assorted wilds (eastern, mirriams, ect) apart from domestic bronzes? And can it be done somewhat young? or will i need to wait most of the season? Also is there any difference between black phase of blue slate and black spanish?
Thanks
Sib

About 99% of people who think they have a wild breed really have a bronze with some of that breed in it. Kinda like hatcheries selling Ameracauna chicken, 99% of them are easter eggers, just a cross. The blacks and black spanish are the same thing I think but I have never raised blacks.
