I have been having a prolonged egg decline - usually 7 out of 8 hens, it declined during our very hottest weeks here in NJ ... lowest being 2/day from 8 hens. However it wasn't the heat because I since have learned that local friends didn't/haven't had a decrease they've been consistently getting 5 or 6 out of 6 hens daily. It has recently come up to 4 per day out of 8 but I still feel that is still too low for a steady rate for time of year.
Only other event that I've notice but I don't think it played any role ... upon monthly inspection I noticed lice on one or two hens - so we DE dusted all. It seemed maybe a week afterwards half the girls were missing fluffy butt feathers ... some a hole in the center, some along the thighs. No red or irritation just feathers gone missing. Could the DE have caused them to pluck,if not that what? Either way I don't think this should have impacted laying. Again I reference local friend who has one hen that is a perpetual plucker since an attack ... and she's still laying regularly.
Furthermore, as if I need any more quandaries, it seems I might have a couple related or unrelated problems - we've been finding one broken or cracked egg almost each day AND to top that off the majority of the hens have taken to no longer laying in the nesting boxes but rather one corner of the coop behind the roost.
They are otherwise happy and healthy, fed broad/diversified diet, outside ranging on pasture all day. I can't figure it out any of these changes out. I'm feeling overwhelmed. PLEASE help. Any ideas or recommendations.
