hardware cloth, preferably 1/4" because even a little less than 1/2" snake can kill a check and (hopefully soon) you'll have chick's running around in the coop!
During the day, when it's light out, better chance of a parent being awake to protect them from a small snake like that though.

4 from 3 birds.... One was soft shelled, my light Sussex doesn't have a day off laying don't know if I should be worried but then again I can't stop her laying!

make sure she has lots of feed and extra bugs if you can get some live meal worms or something for her!
Red wiggler bait is also a good one!
And lots of crushed oyster shell...I think I want to get a little cuttle bone for them too...just for some enrichment/variation/choice for the girls.

I got 12, one year old Commercial Plymouth Barred Rock hens yesterday. Today so far I got 6 good eggs and 1 soft shelled egg that they ate.
Only 3 of the birds are for me the other 9 are for my neighbour and my mother in law.

Does anyone have any tips about things I should look for in the birds when picking which ones I want to keep.

No more than 2 years old. i have 5 hens and they had been averaging 4 a day and one went broody and it slowed to 2 to 3 so we moved her and still only 2 to 3. Eating great drinking lots of water don't look sick and not scratching. Today 4 for 4 so go figure. The broody hen we moved still hasn't put out an egg yet been about 2 weeks now.
