I experienced a behavior I never saw, till today. I went out around 9 this morning, like I do daily, to give them a treat of scratch grains, refill outside waterer, check feeder and inside waterer, and most importantly check for eggs.:D I collected 4 out of a possible 5.
Well I decided to do my weekly examination of each bird. 3 don't mind, 2 protest.
After I finished, I sat down and watched my girls on this beautiful morning. After about 15 minutes, Raggedy Ann,( she's the girl that was attacked by a coopers hawk last November) went into the coop and into a nest box. I saw her through the window.
I said great, I'll wait for the 5th egg.
About 20 minutes later she came out, walked around the pen, picking up twigs, the size of toothpicks and tossing them over her right wing, around the sixth time one landed on her back, then she stopped picking up twigs and walked around till another hen removed it, less than half a minute. I never seen that behavior before. I did not have my phone to take a picture.:he
Well I went out at 6:30 this evening to let them free range, and check for eggs, none in nests. I searched the pen and found an egg that Blondie laid, I have seen her lay eggs in the pen before right in front of me.
So Raggedy Ann already laid her egg before 9. Why did she go back into nest box for 20 minutes? I already removed the real eggs and then do that behavior. If only I knew telepathy.
5/5 today. GC
