How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

My roommate is from here and she just sat around with a shocked look afterward. She said she'd never seen wind like that and she thought it was a tornado. "We're in the middle of the southwest desert, there aren't any tornadoes here," says I. Hahaha. I was wrong. We found out the next day it was an EF 1. It touched down southeast of us but we still got those winds.

Today I learned EF stands for "Enhanced Fujita." I kept reading that as "Enchanted Fajita" and was very confused. 🤣

Yes, I have been talking with them. I do think the younger ones are just following along with the pattern of the older ones for winter.

If you take care of your chickens, I’m sure they’ll get happy and old!
I am on BYC so that is a good ingredient to care for my chickens. :)
I had many Isa Brown before and all die of reproductive issues. Now most of my flock is heritage breed so I hope they live longer than Isa Brown. We got lot of rain over here, and this mean chickens eat many stuff on the ground, wet ground causes many ill health, then after the rain the mosquitoes are another problem. I do my everything in my capacity/ability/knowledge/seek help. I think heritage breeds are less prone to ill health than production layers. But then I found Isa Brown is very personal and has lot of personality than my heritage breed.

This sure is the right place to be!

Personally, I don’t love ISA Browns, Rhode Island Reds, or Cinnamon Queens, for that reason (they don’t seem to be as healthy because they are bred solely for egg production). I’m glad that yours were friendly, because mine of that breed weren’t. I also didn’t get them until they were pullets, so that probably attributed to their nature as well.

I’m sorry that your living conditions are just difficult and wet for you! 😞

I do agree that heritage breeds seem to be a little hardier. But then again, we’re all learning here (and that means me).

Tornados don't happen here so no one knew what it was at the time. It's not like there was a tornado warning and we got prepared or anything. We get violent storms in the summer and we saw the wind and rain were getting pretty crazy so we went out to check on the chickens.

The run is completely exposed in the yard but the coop where they sleep is in a relatively protected area between a brick wall and the house so we got everyone in there. It has a tarp over it for shade and rain and we stood out there and hung onto that tarp for dear life while we watched the wind destroy everything around us. I remember seeing branches fly past from trees that don't grow anywhere near us and wondering where the heck those came from. Plants, roofing, sheds, car covers, trampolines - everything was blowing by and at us. We were pelted with hail and debris. The wind and rain roared like freight train. My ears rang for an hour afterward.

I'll never forget that day. Standing outside in a freakin' tornado without knowing that's what it was. Crazy. We were bruised up from flying debris and soaked through but we're very lucky we weren't badly hurt and everyone in the flock was safe. Afterward I think I had the nicest hot shower of my life!
Gosh you’re very lucky.

Even an EF0 can kill a person with debris and whatnot. Very glad all of you were ok.

I have barnyard mutts and heritage breed and some production breeds. One of the red sex-links is going on 6 and so is the black sex-link. I give the red one 1/2 an aspirin a day studies have shown some help with reducing inflammation from salpingitis with aspirin. It also helps with her arthritis.

As for personability I have all sort here, my Buff Orps of big sucks and love cuddling, some of my silkies are not at all cuddly some are. Each is an individual.
