How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

One of my birds got mycoplasmosis last fall - Pudding. We quarantined her, alone, poor baby! For 45 days and no one else got it and I didn't do anything for her other than food and water.

It's not a serious illness, and it's also *extremely* common and most backyard flocks have it. The bird will be a carrier.

I was relentless with calling local vets until I could get someone who had experience and ended up talking with my local vet from the USDA who checks the industrial birds in my area. He said that mycoplasmosis was not a big deal, but to quarantine if I didn't want everyone to get it - even though everyone would likely make it through if they didn't have any underlying issues before getting it.

I have his direct # on hand if anything weird ever comes up again lol it was worth all that calling around!

Oh and fwiw, most backyard flocks also have fowl pox and that's another no biggy if the bird is healthy. Blanche had that and she's the only one that did or showed any symptoms and that was year too. That's passed on by mosquitos.
Yes I am sure it’s going through my flock, my Lav Orp had a swollen face back in the Autumn. She got over it and is fine, no wheezing sneezing etc. But Clyde is different, he has quite bad rales (lung rattles) and is very wheezy, coughing and sneezing; so he gets a course of Tylan.

I thought about dosing the whole gang, as I do see some others sniffling, but I would rather not dose if they are ok. I’ll keep an eye on them all. There is no egg withdrawl for Tylan (Tylosin) so no worries there. And no adverse toxicity at high doses.

The big issue was trying to find dosing for an individual bird. I ended up getting a kitchen scale that does mg weights. The dose is 50mg/kg daily.

Let me tell you 50mg is an incredibly small amount! I had a hard time getting near that on the scale it’s so small!

Anywhooo today I was given 20 lovely eggs - thanks ladies!

Have a lovely weekend people.

12 eggs laid today but one broken in the nest, DH said. He collected today, I am still laid up with this knee although I am starting to walk on it a tiny bit with the aid of two canes. Hobble, hobble, lol.

There was at least one fatality in Poplar Bluff, 30 miles east of me where we do our shopping, from a tornado last night, and I understand, lots of damage. I think we lost a kindergarten, maybe a church and damage to other businesses and some homes. One whole trailer park, I heard, was wiped out. Another tornado did some damage in Van Buren, our county seat, 25 miles or so west of us, but we are good. I heard St Louis got hit with 6 tornadoes but at this point I have not heard of any fatalities! God is good!

A new record of 14/19 plus another 5 hidden ones from the naughty bantam.
Wonder if it would help to keep everyone locked in the run for a week or two, to re-orient them to using the nests. I also wonder if it might be helpful to have a nest built just for her that the other chickens might find too small to be comfortable, say, 8x8x8"?

We are working on enclosing the run before we get the garden planted so we can't lock them in just yet. I've added a smaller makeshift box that she has used before but apparently she changed her mind. She hid them under the nesting boxes this time. I don't know what it is about the EEs but mine are just determined to lay anywhere but the nest boxes.

When any of my chickens started laying in corners of the coop under the nest boxes or places otherwise difficult or impossible to reach, I make it impossible for them to lay there. I'll put a big 5-gal bucket back there or anything else I can find to block that spot. I am not crawling back in there on my hands and knees! No! (This is me stomping my foot!)
