Two of the 19 week old BO's doing the squat/red combs...no eggs yet. Two of the 18 week old BR's have red face and one squats...no eggs yet. One of the 18 week old SLW has a red face and is screaming the Egg Song...no squat or egg! Could it be the 100's we have had for 20+ days with no end in sight!
Getting 8 from 10 girls. 3 RIR, 3 EE, 2 Delaware, 2 Black Australops. The EE's began first about 4 weeks ago. I think everyone is laying now (22 weeks), but one or two take breaks each day. All the eggs are getting bigger each day and I think our Delawares are the ones giving us the BIG eggs. We have finally trained Pocahontas to lay in the nesting box and NOT by the front porch or in the blackberries. Yay! Love our girls!
Out of my five red hens, two of which are aged but who knows how long my record is: Five eggs. This happened once a couple of weeks ago, beginning of August.
I get four eggs 14% of the time in the summer.
I get three 70% of the time in the summer.
I get two eggs 15% of the time in the summer.
Of my three younger red comets (all range from 1 to 2 years old now) I'm still getting eggs even though one is molting. I don't know why.
Perhaps it's what I feed them? I go nuts feeding them. In a week they'll consume
freeze dried mealworms (a tub of 10,000)
blueberries (two or three large packages)
7 large heads romaine lettuce
an average of two or three fresh ears of corn a day
sunflower seed
flax seed
Layena
The regulars such as grit/oyster shell/ etc.
One of the hens, I don't know which, throws out these huge eggs which often have flawed shells. The eggs are so big I had to order different containers to fit them, and the duck containers seem to be big enough.
When it's cold or as a change I'll had Quaker instant oats or farina in there. They're able to graze on my backyard lawn, dig up bugs etc. except during the months of April/May/June/July/Aug when they only go out supervised because stuff is growing out there.
