Hello all! Now that at least one of my 12 RIR pullets have begun to lay, I am curious- how many eggs do you get per chicken per week?

I am mostly interested in RIR laying rates, as those are what I have :) But I would be curious to see how many other breeds lay as well :)

Also, what colors do each lay? I got light brown with tiny white specks on it from my first layer, and I was expecting them to be a darker brown. But they're hatchery RIR's so maybe that's why?

Thanks! :)

I have 29 hens. During summer I was getting 22 to 24 eggs a day. I have two old hens, one does not lay anymore and the other maybe 2 eggs a week. Now that fall is here I'm only getting 20 eggs a day. 3 hens are molting now and the others are slowing down. I have 4 delawares, 7 red stars, 4 buff orpingtons, 2 RIR, 1 speckled Sussex, 3 easter eggers, 3 barred rock, 3 SLWandottes, 2 black jersey giants and one big jersey giant white rooster named Harvey.
Saturday eggs small.jpg I love them all and they love me too!

There will always be variables, depending on diet, stress, length of day etc. I would think for a RIR 4-6 eggs per week ideally, but it may slow down over winter.

I have supplemental lighting so they produce over winter :) We eat a lot of eggs and they need to pay for their feed with the sales from the extras.

Why were they re-homed, just out of curiosity? And those are some beautiful eggs!

I go through this every year - Grandma Trip to the Mainland. Someone I know LOVES any chicken I raise, used to raise chicks for her in the past, she takes them & gets me chicks to start over. It's sounds crazy but works for us ;)

Thank you, they were also very delicious.
