Yesterday I met a lady at TSC and unless I misheard her, she said her chickens would lay five eggs each every day! I was just wondering if that's possible, and if it is, how could I get my chickens to lay more than one egg each day?

No, it isn't possible. The lady either mis-spoke or you mis-heard. What she may have meant to say is 5 eggs per week.

On average, I hen lays an egg about once every 26 hours, so for example her week may look like this:

  • Monday - 9am
  • Tuesday - 11am
  • Wednesday - 1pm
  • Thursday - 3pm
  • Friday - no egg
  • Saturday - 9am....and so on

Heritage breeds may lay less often but for longer. Production egg layers may lay pretty much every day in their first season or two of laying, and then they're done. Each hen is unique. I have one who lays 2 days in a row and takes the third day off pretty consistently.

But there is no breed that lays 5 eggs in a day. Now, you will sometimes find a new pullet starting to lay may lay shell-less eggs, or multiple eggs in a day while she works out the kinks in the egg-laying system, but it will be an anomaly - not a regular thing.
