I just ordered 2 silkies a polish chicken and an Orpington chicken. They are all hens and I was wondering how many eggs I could get a week when they are in they're prime egg laying years! Please let me know. Thanks!

Welcome to BYC! I have had all three of these breeds at one time or another (currently have Buff Orpingtons). They are all gentle and docile breeds, but not the best laying chickens. You can expect about 3 eggs per week from your Silkie (very small eggs). The Polish is harder to predict. A few of mine were good layers (4 per week) although the eggs were rather small, other were poor layers (1 or 2 per week). The Buff Orpington will likely be your most consistant layer, giving you 3 large, brown eggs per week. If you want gentle, docile birds for heavy egg production, you might look into purchasing some Black Sex Links or Black Australorps, both of which are very hardy and will average about 5 large, brown eggs per week. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome, my guess is you will get about an egg per day in the summer.

I love my Orphingtons for eggs and my easter egger as well.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Cute chicks! Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts that mention egg laying ability you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf Silkies do not lay that many eggs overall because they are so broody, when they are laying they do lay decently 4+ eggs a week, but they usually only lay for a month or two if you are lucky before going broody. Polish really vary depending on the blood line, some are really good layers, some are really bad. Orpingtons tend to be decent layers 4+ week, but again they are broody so that cuts down their overall numbers.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I do not have the answer to this question, but wow are your chicks adorable!!!

Enjoy them as they grow so fast. Welcome to our flock!

Your silkie is gorgeous. They aren't known as great layers BUT, the fact that they generally go broody makes up for it. Once they do, you can put fertile eggs under them of any breed you want. They will brood and hatch them as their own. Sure beats using an incubator. Mama knows best and will teach them what to eat etc., how to be a chicken. Many people own silkies for just that reason, especially if they buy expensive rare breed eggs to hatch.
