I plan to order some chicks and ducklings from ideal poultry enxt week. I was reading their shipping policy and noticed that they said they might put in male chicks for warmth. How many chicks do you think they will put in there? I'm only ordering 4 chicks and 2 ducklings. Also is there a chance they might put in an extra of my chosen breed in there? Thanks.

I ordered 15 chicks..got 5 extra males..

they will usually round up to 20 I think..and its there choice. Although I'm sure you could try and see if they will let you chose. Doesn't hurt to ask.

In my replacement shipment of 11 standard layer pullets, they added 8 cockerels - sex-linked black - none of the breeds I ordered.

I was contemplating ordering additional pullets to avoid the cockerels, but Mikaela told me that the packers decide how many chicks to add, depending on the shipping destination, the weather, the breed. She couldn't tell me how many additional pullets I would need to add - I guess unless I added 14 to make a boxful.

I ordered twelve and got 9 males( well actually they messed up and gave me 8 males and one hen, yes! ) I don't think they should have included all of the extras but they did all arrive happy, so I guess it did work.

Wow thats a lot of males to try and get rid of after you get your chosen chicks. What did you do to get rid of them (or did you keep them?)

You are right! To add to that, I had just gotten a strait run group of assorted breeds the week before and all twelve of them turned into roosters. I ordered one Barred rock roo, and two cornish rock roos. Now that the dust has settled, I have 19 roos left, and only ten hens!!! I am in the process of trying to find the roos good homes so if you are in NC, or know somebody who is, please consider getting one of my roos. I will even drive a little to get them to you if needed. Not to get off topic, but I really want to get the word out.

Order 20 of what you like. If you cannot keep that many...order ones you know you can sell for $5 each so you don't get stuck with roos. Unless of course you want to fill your freezer

Your paying the small box fee of $7.00 anyway so my guess is the packers will fill the box to "justify the shipping charge" So figure on about 20 total (sounds about like the average) Some may also depend on the hatch rate if they have a bunch of males to find homes for etc.. Probably many deciding factors involved.
(just my guess as I m not associated with Ideal nor an expert on their policies etc. Just another happy customer!!!

Thats exactly what I plan to do next. I only ordered twelve and that was not enough to fill the box. The total number of birds was 21 in the box I recieved so I will wait until I need at least 20 to order again.
