I do have soy meal (I buy it for the dairy goats) , I guess I can mix it with the remainder of the turkey grower I have so that it doesnt go to waist. After that I just buy the turkey starter as we dont have a mill that sells anything in bulk around here:(. I only think I can get that way is corn strait from the farmers.

Whatever you do DO NOT use medicated feed if you do not have to, If you feed them that as normal feed they gain an immunity to the medication. When that happens you can no longer treat them if they become sick.

BAD NEWS FOR YA.... THE MEDICATION IN THE FEED? YEAH, UM, THAT KINDA ONLY WORKS ON 1 SPECES AND 1 PROBLEM AND SINCE IT HAS BEEN USED FOR DECADES... WE'RE ALREADY THERE! THE BIRDS DO NOT GAIN AN IMMUNITY TO THE MEDICATION, THE INFECTIOUS AGENTS DO. THE BIRDS WILL BUILD A TOLERANCE TO IT AND THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEMS MAY BECOME LAZY WITHOUT IT ONCE THIS HAPPENS. THE MEDICATED FEED FOR QUAIL ( THERE ARE DIFFERENT VERSIONS FOR PHEASANTS AND CHUKAR) IS/ WAS GEARED TOWARD BOB WHITES AND ENTERITIS THAT THEY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TOO AS BABIES..... TRY USING MEDICATED FEED ON A SICK ADULT BOB FOR TREATMENT... YOUR RESULTS WILL LIKELY BE PRETTY UNFAVORABLE. TRY TREATING ADULT COTURNIX WITH IT AND THE RESULTS WILL BE EVEN LESS FAVORABLE. MOST QUAIL SPECES DO NOT RESPOND WELL TO ANTIBIOTICS READILY OBTAINABLE AT FEED STORES NO MATTER THE ILLNESS OR AGE OF THE BIRD. THEY REQUIRE SPECIALTY MEDS THAT MUST BE ORDERED FROM A NON-LOCAL (IN MOST CASES..) SOURCE IN COMBINATION WITH MEDS THAT MAY ONLY BE OBTAINED FROM A VET--- EVEN THIS HAS LIMITED RESULTS AND A MAJORITY OF THE ILLNESSES YOU WOULD NEED THIS FOR WOULD TURN THE SURVIVORS INTO CARRIERS--- THERE BY MAKING THEM USELESS AND AN INFECTIOUS LIABILITY TO YOUR OTHER STOCK.

NOW AS FAR AS BIRD HEALTH WITH MEDICATED FEEDS--- IT CAN DAMAGE KIDNEYS OVER LONG TERM USE. AND OF COURSE ITS AN UN-NECESSARY CHEMICAL IN THE BIRD ITSELF. BEST SUGGESTION HERE IS TO ASK YOUR FEED DEALER TO ORDER YOU NON MEDICATED FEED IN THE FORMULA YOU DESIRE.... I PERSONALLY KNOW OF NO MAJOR FEED MANUFACTURERS THAT DO NOT OFFER NON MEDICATED VERSIONS OF ANY FORMULA THEY MAKE--- NOT SAYING THIS IS TRUE OF ALL, BUT AT LEAST NONE THAT I KNOW OF.... FEED IS A VERY REGOINAL THING, AND DOES VARY GREATLY FROM AREA TO AREA EVEN WITHIN THE SAME MANUFACTURER--- FOR INSTANCE BOTH PURINA AND NUTRENA MAKE MEDICATED AND NON MEDICATED STARTERS--- NOT ALL AREAS HAVE ACCESS TO BOTH EASILY WITHOUT HAVING TO ORDER IT.

WELL PUT JJMR!! Thats why I don't use medicated feed. BUT I choose to treat the birds at 2 weeks old and again at 4 weeks. I use a medication (corid) that wont hurt their kidneys like sulfur drugs do. I also worm them at this time too.

I agree with the statement about the medicated feed, but our feed store is not very customer friendly when it comes to any special orders. Sure they will maybe...possibly get it in for me. But how long will I wait? could be months, plus they wont bring it in unless I order a pallet full. Not exactly pocket book friendly or a good way to go, we are so unusually humid this summer. I usually never have trouble buying feeds in bulk (when I can LOL) but this year I have dumped more feed then I care to think about from mold issues

So its either buy medicated starter, or buy grower that's not medicated but doesn't have the % protein the birds require. Not much for choices, huh?

SOUNDS LIKE Y'ALL NEED TO FIND ANOTHER FEED DEALER.... SOMETIMES ITS WORTH THE DRIVE TO GET WHAT YOU WANT/ NEED. OF COURSE THE HUMIDITY ISSUE COMPLICATES IT. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO DRIVE A LIL WAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT AND STOCK UP ON IT SO YOU DONT HAVE TO DRIVE OVER THERE ALL THE TIME... BUT WASTED FEED IS WASTED MONEY AND LIKELY TO ADD UP TO MORE $$ THAN WHAT THE GAS FROM FREQUENT TRIPS WILL COST YOU.

DO THEY OFFER A NON MEDICATED TURKEY STARTER OR WATERFOWL STARTER? THESE ARE NOT USUALLY 100% COMPLETE FOR QUAIL BUT ABOUT AS CLOSE A SUBSTITUE AS YOU CAN GET AND USUALLY IN THE HIGH 20 TO LOW 30% PROTIEN RANGE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE PURINA WEB SITE THEY HAVE LISTINGS OF INGREDIENTS.... THIS CAN GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT THEY ACTUALLY NEED AND YOU CAN FORMULA SHOP TIL YOU FIND A VERY CLOSE SUBSTITUTE, OR FEED THE MEDICATED VERSION... FOR SHORT TERM USE IT WILL NOT HURT THE BIRDS. ALSO THE PURINA WEB SITE HAS A DEALER LOCATOR OPTION--- YOU CAN USE THAT TO FIND A BETTER FEED STORE IN YOUR AREA?? I AM NOT SURE IF NUTRENA OR CENTRAL STATES OFFER DEALER SEARCH OPTIONS BUT IT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
