how many hours of darkness does my duck need to make her stop laying

I have a duck who keeps prolapsing and I’m trying to make her stop laying eggs so I’m putting her in a big dog crate in a dark room at 4 PM every day and not letting her out until 8 AM. That’s 16 hours of darkness so far she still laying eggs, but it’s only been two days I wonder is that the right amount of hours, can I do less than that? and how many days should it take for her to stop laying?

i found a thread with a post by @Wyorp Rock regarding a chicken with prolapse vent and this was in there and this is helpful >View attachment 3924474
Hopefully you'll find the answer in the thread that @Canadian Wind posted.

I'm not well versed on a Duck's laying cycle but would assume it's similar to a chicken's.
For a chicken, it can take weeks to stop production, so if it's only been a few days, then it's not been long enough.

I'm sorry she's prolapsing, this can become a chronic issue, hopefully you'll be able to stop production and give her body a rest and it will "reset". Hard to know.

Hi!
I'm so sorry to hear you've been having these issues with your duck- I replied to you in my thread with a bit of info on how I got mine to stop laying. It does take a bit of time, but it can work. What you want to happen, is for her to go through a big moult where egg production ceases and hopefully doesn't resume until spring. Force moulting is the method I had to use for my girl, it entails significant diet and lighting changes to simulate autumn/winter. Some have success doing just lighting changes, like youre doing, so it's really up to you and how much you believe she can handle/what would be best for her.
I hope she quits laying and takes that much needed break!

Taking down the amount of protein in her food would possibly help? Just thinking out loud about what I consider sensible since egg production requires a lot of suitable input.
