How many nesting boxes?

Hello Everybody!

My name is Dave. I am from upstate New York. I am glad to have happened across this website.

My girlfriend and I got our first chicks a couple of weeks ago - a dozen mixed pullets hopefully. We are almost done building our chicken coop which provides 4 square feet/chicken. How many nesting boxes should we provide for 12 birds? Thanks.

! Pleased you joined our community! I think you could get by easily with 3 boxes. I have 18 hens and they only use 3...not necessarily always the same three, but 3. One day I had 13 eggs on one box!! Good luck to you!

No matter how many nest boxes you have the girls will fight to use the same one - sometimes they even climb on top of the present occupant and lay an egg on them .
