How many of you give away your roosters?
I am new to this thing and wonder how many give away your extra roos? How do you decide which and when to give them away? How many raise and eat them? How many upon determining it's a roo cull it immediately?
What do you do the most w/ your extra roos?

I try to sell the nice ones of hard-to-find breeds; well-behaved roos that are probably not saleable I try to find a 'free' home for, with someone who wants a flock roo just for fun; any of the above that I fail to find homes for, and obnoxious roos, get made into curry

But that's just me, of course there are as many ways of dealing with it as there are chicken-owners.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I give my extras away... I usually choose by what breed the rooster may be, then how friendly best looking for size and feathers etc.

We have a few chick customers that want to raise roos for food. And some people need to replace their flock roo, myself included every few years, and the little chicks that go unspoken for can easily be sold on Craigslist to people who have reptiles to feed.

recently posted my Del roo on craigs and got alot of crackpots. Had a tuf time selling CM chicks. I don't know why. I do see lots of postings for chicks but no CM's. Or Dels for that matter. I can't figure out why. I know I'm going to get more roos. What do people charge on average?

Check for local auctions... a feed store a 20 minutes away has a small animal auction and hay/straw auction every saturday morning. Lose $ on them, but I don't have to take care of them anymore. Some folks are looking for chickens to raise, while others are looking for dinner.

I get rid of newly hatched (I do sexlinks) boys for $1...anything as long as I don't have to feed freeloaders since we are in the egg producing end of things. Since the realease of a few documentaries depicting commercial chicken raising facilities we have a few people who would like us to raise roos up for meat, and I do have a few breeds that are dual purpose. So for those they pay $1 for the chick plus $1 / week that I keep the bird to pay for food, my time, etc. They generally pay a fortune to have them processed at the local livestock butcher. We are not in an area that raises a lot of livestock anymore. So there aren't many choices for processing, other than DIY. Also, I sell the young male chicks to reptile keepers for $1. So it just depends on who shows up first.

We're going to be giving away our current EE roo when our Ameraucanas, Marans, and so forth grow up. We have a friend/far off neighbor who really likes him!

Otherwise, any extra good quality roos of ours will be sold or eaten.

I gave away my three extra little cockerels as soon as I knew for sure they were indeed boys. No sense taking up the additional space and feed for birds I couldn't keep anyways.
