How many of you give

Gosh, who do y'all find to take all those roos?! I have two (someone at the hatchery wasn't paying attention when sorting chicks) and they were beating the snot out of my girls last spring (not enough hens for 2 roos). Last summer, I tried like heck to find a home for one of them (including posting him on BYC) and nobody would take him. So he's still here, things have calmed down a bit, we'll see how it goes this breeding season. But I had absolutely no luck finding a home for one roo, and here all you folks are talking casually about giving away multiple extra roos!! Share your secret - or maybe I just live in the wrong place!

We eat them!

Give away perfectly good food?? No way!

Luckily I have only had to rehome 3-4 roos over time and have always found nice homes. Ones that I could visit, they wanted a roo for crowing and breeding, etc. I have ridiculouly mean neighbors that frown on me owning any of the poultry I have. My last order from a hatchery produced one roo and I just love him so much I decided to keep him and say "pooey" to the neighbors.

I posted signs at the library and the post office branch. I told every single person I met that I had roosters to give away. Turns out the lady that took them was someone my DH had known his whole life. She had 80 hens, but not a single roo.

You can't even give them away here. I have to offer them with at least one hen before anyone will take them. Most of mine lose their heads.

Networking, my DH eats breakfast at the same place everyday and he just passes the word around that we have some extras. Got rid of six this fall with no problem at all. What one does with the roosters after they leave my care is their choice.

I just gave away a beautiful eight month old RIR roo. He has his own hens now, but I still miss him. I do have five other roo. A Polish, EE, and three bantam roos.

I have Dels and CM's and it seems like no one wants them. They aren't that common here as far as I know. If I could sex the Dels I would cull them as chicks I think. Then again I probably couldn't do it. Heck I'd have to get some one to do it if I was to eat them. My wife says she won't eat any of my chickens.

Must be a NY thing, huh? Besides posting on BYC I called cooperative extension, contacted local 4H, and put up a sign at the local Agway...by the time I tried to move one of the roos, they were over a year old, so limited value in terms of food. Also, one belongs to my niece (she chose him before I knew any of my pullets were not pullets), and the other one is drop-dead gorgeous and I'd have hated to send him off to be dinner anyway... such a softie I am.

I gave my roos to the person that purchased my pullets. Maybe I got lucky. I posted it on craigslist and got 4 calls in less than 24hrs.
