How many people set and forget?

Glad you know where I am coming from chicksntexas - its hard when you are looking at something but your not totally sure what it is! I figure the only way to get better at it is to keep practising!!!! That is keep candling and keep hatching chicks!

Well I just candled the rest - and of the 42 eggs I was given, I had put 41 in the bator and just now took out 3 as 2 were cracked and one looked empty. So I opened those 3 up and sure enough one with a crack had quit early on, and the other 2 didn't look like they'd even started. The rest were all very dark, saw plenty of veins and blobs so fingers crossed for the rest of them! I feel much better now

and I'm not planning on candling again until day 18 - or day 14 if i cant help myself!

I would not just leave them alone for the whole period. Usually add water twice every week. I used to forget checking the incubator. One egg broke and spray ordour. For the batch of eggs, I only got 30%, even the eggs were picked up locally. (I usually got above 80% from the local eggs)

I don't candle, it's very hard to see in the Coturnix quail eggs, so I "set and forget". BUT, I do check to see if there is a bad smell. I've never heard of quail eggs exploding, and haven't had it happen yet. Although, the ones that weren't fertile didn't smell bad at all, which was weird.

Oh i never forget about my eggs from day 1 to 21 i am always checking on them and i candle mine so that i dont have any exploding ones and to take out the ones that died so that i dont have my hopes up of having 41 eggs then come to find out only 20 were fertile and i only candle once and that is the day i stop turning them and im guessing thats what everyone is calling lockdown? lol im a newcomer here and it is easier to see them as long as i see the air sac and the dark mass i know it has a chick in it and im pretty good at spoting the duds
