here is an idea, go to bunnings and get the anti-bird net from the gardening sections. It keeps birds off orchards but excellent for keeping birds in cages also! Open one side of the sandbox and nail the net over, drape it to a post or to the ground with a piece of wood. You can double or triple the size of the sandbox easily with netting.
