Alright so me and my family made a run for our 20 or so chickens and we were wondering if we would need more than one rooster to say warn or protect them from predators. We have 3 at the moment but want to get rid of 2 just because of how mean they are; but they are in coops. So i guess i have 2 questions. 1:If you have a very mean rooster in a coop then put him in a much larger run would he become less agressive to us? 2:If not would only 1 bantam rooster be enough protection for say 20 hens?

I found that with 15 girls and one roo, he was quite overwhelmed. About half of the girls are still virgins. I would always have 2. As for meanness, I can fix it if they're mean to me. But if they're fighting with the other roo, it's different. I've always had 2 roos with the girls, and everything is fine if one roo always backs down when challenged.

I had 2 roos in with 6 girls at one time till I learned 1 roo to every 10 hens. When we where adding a covered run we discovered how brutal the roos where being. If they where humans they would have gone to prison for rape and assault. We took them both out for a while to give the girls a rest them let the more docile one back after a few months. I actually let the girls choose which one.

I have found that 1 roo to every 8 to 10 hens works best. They will fight some at the beginning but it usually does not last to long. Just keep an eye on them when you first put them toghether. If things get out of hand you may have to step in and seperate for awhile. Eventually things settle down and they get along. They will each have their girls and be happy.
