How many should a beginner start with?

Thanks. It's why I got the dogs so they can protect my ducks when I'm not home. They will kill a raccoon if it comes into the yard.

Not from a raccoon and I've heard some people have had cats kill ducks although my 3 have never bothered mine except when they were just hatched ducklings.

My house cats learned very quick that they are at the bottom of the barnyard totem pole, everyone tries to get them...including the little call ducks lol.
