Probably a silly question, probably been asked hundreds of times before, but I'm planning on building another run so I can add to my chickens. So, how much room does a chicken need?

Rule of thumb around here is 4 sf per bird in the coop & 10 sf per bird in the run.
But it can vary if the birds are bantam, or if you free range.

We have 7 pullets, 3 Barred Rocks and 4 RIR's. They're 13 wks. Their yard is 15' x 16' and their coop is approx 68 sq ft and approx 2' off the ground. We also let them free range in our yard a couple times a day. Somehow when we watch them in "their" yard it just seem small, the bigger they get..... Maybe it's just me wanting to build another coop and of course more babies...

The pen will be about 1,000 square foot. From what I read on another website a while ago, that is enough room for 200 hens. I'm planning on keeping the numbers to about 20- 30.

lol. My current pen is 500 square foot, and it has 14 chickens in it (2 chicks). I'm expecting 3 chicks on the 25th, but I won't be here. I have a hen sitting on 8 eggs starting today. I have 1 chick in the brooder. Altogether I could potentially have upto 300 chickens when the new one is built, but I'm limiting myself to under 50, otherwise I HAVE to register with DEFRA, by law.
