How many times/day do you feed your chickens?

I don't feed half of what is on that list. When you watch animals die from food people feed their animals you will think twice. It may never happen to some but it will with others. It's a chance people are willing to take, go for it. Do what you wish with the list, I really don't care.

I totally agree with you eggsellentfarns, I worked as a Vet Tech for over 13 years, the biggest health issues I seen is people feeding human food to their pets. People don't realize that animals were not meant to eat cook meats. When we cook our meats it becomes toxic to animals. I've seen dogs suffer a horrible death over mushrooms. I can go on, but to say it is not a good list, well, I say don't feed your chickens what is on that list. But again, your adults, their your chickens, do as you please.

I totally agree that the list of "toxic" foods is not beneficial, at least in its current format. My chickens ranged for years in my backyard orchard without any ill affects.
Chickens are pretty good at avoiding harmful foods as long as they have plenty of good food available. So if you just throw out some scraps as extras they'll usually pick through it, eat what they like and leave the rest.
I don't think it's a good idea to feed table scraps to chickens. Unless you are in the habit of wasting a lot of food, your scraps are probably only good for throwing in the compost pile or feeding to a pig.

I agree. But...I don't think it's a bad idea for chickens to eat table scraps at all..it's just recycling and a source of nutrition, much like any other thing they scavenge out of a spent garden, orchard or compost pile. All my animals partake in the kitchen scraps....even the sheep when I had them. Chickens know what they can and cannot eat and I've never seen a chicken die from eating regular ol' kitchen garbage.

Chickens are opportunistic eaters and mine free range at all times, so I encourage every extra source of nutrition they can find out there....that's just that less I have to pay for to feed them. Same with the dog and cat.

Thank you! I will. I've been feeding chickens, dogs and cats on such fare all my life and haven't seen one die from it yet. Of course, in your line of work you only see animals that have suffered from one thing or another and you don't get to see all those that did not. We utilize many different sources of food for our animals as part of their varied diet and I've never had to take one to the vet yet for diet related problems in all these years.

Been doing chickens for 37 yrs now...I'm pretty sure it's safe to say now that I know what to feed a chicken and what not to feed a chicken to keep it alive and healthy.

I always feel like my chickens can break things up like nobody else. Sometimes I will put dead plants in the coup and the chickens will break them down for me with there big chicken feet:D

told you there was gonna be a riot or better yet, FOOD FIGHT !!! i have a question. if it is dangerous to feed cooked meet to chickens and they need the extra protein, surely you cant give them raw meat . i would hate to think of what that does to them even though i know they can be cannibals.

They can eat raw meat just fine as long as it's in small pieces....but then, I've seen a small NH hen swallow a 10 in. snake in one or two gulps. It's not dangerous to feed them cooked meat, though I must admit that cooked meats are not something that ever hits our scrap pile...we eat all that. Even if it did, the dog would gobble it up first.

When I process chickens my flock will stand and wait for the choice bits...I toss them bits of liver, spleen, testicles, and fat. They have no problem eating raw meats. I think it would probably be according to what your animals are conditioned to eat whether they had problems digesting it. Mine are conditioned for everything.

I hope it continues to stay that way for you.

I don't have to put what my experience is. The list is out there for people who wish to see it and learn from it. Your welcome.

Should have seen my hens tear apart the table scraps they got from last nights dinner... Who woulda thunk chickens liked enchiladas...lol

Bugs, and Worms are raw meats. Cooked meats become a toxic fat to animals. It may not bother some but others it will. some foods being fed can be a slow shutdown on their organs, the list goes on.
