If you made a coop 6X10, you would have enough room for 15 birds (4 sq. ft. apiece), and they would still have a little over 12 sq. feet per bird outside.
Storey's chicken book recommends 8 inches of roosting space for each chicken, 10 inches of roosting space for larger breeds.
Edited to put the word 'roosting' in front of 'space.' Otherwise, the recommendation wouldn't be such a great one!
Eight inches of total space per chicken wouldn't give them much elbow-room...wing-room.
Never mind if that doesn't make sense.
