How many toes does a standard cochin normally have?

I just found a drawing of what my Dorkings feet look like so you can compare with yours. Mine look like the drawing on the right! Here's the link:

www.gutenberg.org/files/28775/28775-h/28775-h.htm ***You will have to scroll down until you get to a list called 'Figures in Text'. Go to no.15 in list 'Feet of Fowls' & click on the the number 76 in blue on the right. This will bring up the drawing. Sorry this is so complicated but my other link didn't work.

I have been doing a bit of research on this problem ( unfortunately it is very difficult for me to understand as all the writings are full of terms I don't fully understand). I will try to find out though -- I refuse to be defeated......!! I have an inkling that your 'breeder' may have been' back-breeding' within his limited stock too often & therefore they threw up this abnormality.

Thank you Hattie, what an informative article - it covers LOADS of stuff!

This "breeder" has been in the business for only 5 years, and he mentioned pumping out hundreds of birds per year so I have no idea WHAT is going on there, it didn't look like a big operation at all. Different breeds were penned separately (roo & hens) and well -labeled, so who knows... easy enough to mess with nature and nobody would know, eh?

Ah well. I have a very "special" girl on my hands here, ha ha!

I may let one or two of her eggs hatch down the road since my two roos are white silkies, should be an interesting mix...

Again, ONLY for my own pets!

I am butchering a Cochins roo who was not playing well with the flock. On scalding and plucking the heavily feathered (outside edges only) feet, I found what appears to be an anomaly in toes as well. First toe that would correspond to a index finger and second toes are all good and as expected, small rear facing "thumb" also present and ok. The issue is the outside toe on both feet. It stops about half the expected length. No nail, lots of feathers and just a nubbin end. There doesn't seem to be any fusion of toes on one foot and possibly on the other.Like a vestigial small toe.Is THIS normal??
